Study links foie gras consumption with Alzheimer’s, arthritis, diabetes, other diseases

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

A study published on June 18 in the American Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found a link between the consumption of foie gras and other meat products and a number of diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus type 2, tuberculosis, and amyloidosis. The link exists in genetically susceptible individuals.

The study was lead by Alan Solomon, M.D., a professor and researcher at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine and the director of the Human Immunology and Cancer / Alzheimer’s Disease and Amyloid-Related Disorders Research Program. Amyloidoses are a group of disease states caused by the deposition in vital organs of proteins in the form of fibrils, causing a range of symptoms such as swelling and kidney damage. The deposition of amyloid beta in the brain is central in the origin of the disease process of Alzheimer’s disease. Foie gras is made from the livers of ducks or geese that have been force-fed.

According to Solomon, “we posit that this and perhaps other forms of amyloidosis may be transmissible, akin to the infectious nature of prion-related illnesses [such as mad cow disease]. In addition to foie gras, meat derived from sheep and seemingly healthy cattle may represent other dietary sources of [the fibrils]. People with a family history of Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or other amyloid-associated diseases should avoid consuming foie gras and other foods that may be contaminated with fibrils,” continued Solomon.

Thaksin still pervades Thai political landscape

Thaksin still pervades Thai political landscape

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

Thailand’s fugitive ex-premier, Thaksin Shinawatra is in the news again today, phoning supporters in the country and appealing for no celebration of his sixtieth birthday at Sanam Luang outside the royal palace in Bangkok. This follows some red-shirted United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) supporters vowing to go ahead with the party despite Bangkok‘s Governor, Sukhumband Paribatra, saying he will deny any request.

According to Thailand’s English-language Bangkok Post, UDD leader Shinawat Haboonpad expressed determination to see the July 26 celebration go ahead, “… we will show our civil disobedience and ignore his order”.

The divisive impact of the populist Thaksin stretches back prior to him being ousted by a bloodless military coup in September 2006. As far back as 2005 figures within the Thai establishment were speaking against him; Thaksin used the courts to try and prevent dissemination of negative material, including the publication of a sermon by a respected Buddhist monk who compared him to Phra Devadhat, the Thai Buddhist equivalent of the devil. Bangkokians formed into the yellow-shirted anti-Thaksin People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) accusing the Prime Minister of corruption. Following the military intervention in 2006, and a groundswell of support among rural poor voters, the opposing pro-Thaksin groups formed into the UDD. Despite conviction in-absentia, Thaksin colours Thai politics, and has derailed efforts to stabilise the country’s political institutions.

This past week it has been the lead-up to the December 2008 dissolution of the pro-Thaksin People’s Power Party (PPP) government that has resurfaced. The then-Prime Minister, Somchai Wongsawat was barred from politics and his PPP dissolved by the country’s Constitutional Court following anti-Thaksin yellow shirts occupying Bangkok’s international airport and stranding as many as 300,000 tourists in the country. Now the country’s Foreign Minister, Kasit Piromya, a PAD leader, is facing pressure to step down for his part in the airport siege and blockade.

A report in Monday’s Bangkok Post indicates that Thai authorities continue to pursue Thaksin. The Interior Minister said that an attempt had been made to arrest Thaksin in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, but he had evaded capture and managed to return to Fiji where he remains in exile and a fugitive.

Becoming An Emergency Dentist Is Important

By Adriana Noton

An emergency dentist may be able to help a person who has severe pain associated with their teeth and jaws. These individuals are able to diagnose and treat problems associated with one’s teeth and help them take care of them in the future. They sometimes advise a person on what they feel is the perfect nutrition and the number of times that a person should brush their teeth.

Because of the sensitive nature of their jobs, these individuals are expected to wear protective masks and gloves in order to avoid getting or transmitting infection to their patients. Their main job is to remove teeth, perform root canals, fill cavities and clean teeth. Others may also perform aesthetic services such as contouring of a clients dental structure or whitening of teeth.

Some of the equipment that they use to treat their patients include probes, scapulas, x-ray machines, scanners and lasers. Technological advances have now made it possible for the specialists to detect breaking teeth and abscesses early enough to correct them. Antibiotics can be used to clear away an infection while surgical procedures such as a root canal may be done on a tooth with a wide cavity.

These physicians may sometimes work in their own private practices where they may be responsible for bookkeeping, hiring of employees, ordering of supplies and paying of taxes. Others work in big hospitals and may be expected to train graduates in the course of their work. Dentistry work is wide and has sub groups that involve orthodontists – who are the largest group known for their work of straightening teeth and prescribing bracelets. There are also pediatric dentists who are specialized in treating children’s teeth. These have to be patient and sympathetic because kids are afraid of pain and have to be treated with care.

Because of their high demand, these physicians work five days a week for twelve hours a day in order to meet their patients needs and schedules. Their total weekly hours vary and may range from 35 to 40 hours each week. Those who are trying to establish their own solo practices may work twice as hard in order to get clientele that will go with them when they open up their own practice. Even after retiring, dentists have been known to continue working on a part time basis.

The tools used in this line of work are dangerous and have to be used with caution. These professionals are expected to get licensed in any state they wish to work in and even in most parts of the world. For this to happen, the individual must graduate from an accredited school and pass bar exams that are provided by the state. Clinicals that test the aspiring physician and practicals are assessed in order to determine if the individual is ready to start seeing patients.

Individuals who want to be dentists can take biology, physics and health courses while in high school and college. The sciences are a must have for any student looking to join this profession. For an individual to join a dental school, they must have two years in college.Grade point averages, scores and exams results are reviewed by dental schools in order to accept or deny students.

An emergency dentist needs to be a problem solver, have good sight and memory. They must also exercise good judgment especially when deciding what treatment options to choose for their patients. Being able to communicate effectively and being good natured are attributes that these professionals should have.

Altered HIV a potential cancer treatment?

Altered HIV a potential cancer treatment?
By Admin | Posted in Uncategorized

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

At UCLA, a team of researchers has developed a harmless version of HIV that is designed to seek out, and potentially destroy, cancer cells.

In a laboratory-mouse experiment, the treated cells headed directly for melonoma and lung cancer cells, clustering around them with a surprising level of intuitiveness. Gene therapy for cancer has been at an impasse for the last 20 years, said the team, but now an effective carrier has been found in the most unlikely of sources. Essentially, one of the world’s largest health threats is now being considered to fight another.

Says Dr. Irvin Chen, from UCLA’s AIDS Institute, “The disarmed AIDS virus acts like a Trojan horse, transporting therapeutic agents to a targeted part of the body, such as the lungs, where tumors often spread.”

First the virus’s coating is removed and the virus is reprogrammed so that it recognizes and attaches to the p-lipoproteins of a cancer cell, one of cancer’s primary defenses. The retro-virus was also altered with a fluorescent protein for easy tracking within the lab mice. The next step will be to graft a cancer-killing gene onto the modified AIDS virus’s genetic structure.

Currently, a case of melanoma skin cancer spreading to the lungs is a confirmed death sentence. Should this method of treatment improve into a workable treatment, both life-threatening cancers and the AIDS retro-virus could be effectively neutered. But the team cautions that the treatment is in the very early stages and will take several more years to develop.
