Brazil’s Minas state stops sales of Toyota Corolla

Brazil’s Minas state stops sales of Toyota Corolla

Friday, April 23, 2010

Minas, one of the largest states of Brazil, has stopped the sale of the Toyota Corolla over safety concerns.

The move was made after nine Corolla customers reported that their cars automatically accelerated. The state public prosecutor’s office said in an online statement on Tuesday that the problem is blamed on accelerator pedals sticking underneath floor mats. Local government said the issue was “putting in danger the lives of occupants”.

According to the prosecutor’s office, sales of Corollas may resume when Toyota alters the floormats in its current models. Toyota has recalled over eight million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems.

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Learn About Your Home’s Water Heater

byAlma Abell

Your home’s water heater is relatively simple, but its simplicity won’t keep it from eventually developing problems. Knowing how your water heater works, and how to handle issues that arise, can help you avoid problems that are more serious.

Wait….Where’s my Water Heater Again?

Many people completely forget about their water heaters, unless there is a problem. It’s usually a case of “out of sight, out of mind”–your water heater is likely in an out-of-the-way part of your home, and in most cases it does its job without a fuss. However, forgetting about them can be a mistake.

Worst-Case Scenarios for Water Heaters

Unlike some parts of your home, when a water heater fails, it sometimes doesn’t quit working completely. In some cases, you can find yourself dealing with gallons of boiling hot water, or you could even have a fire, explosion or release of carbon monoxide. It’s important to pay attention to your water heater–have it inspected each year, and have it regularly maintained by a professional.

The Basics on Water Heaters

Most water heaters are simple, and they have changed very little in the past half-century. However, they have undergone some refinements, and today’s water heaters are more efficient, last longer, and are safer. All heaters convert energy into heat, transferring that heat to your water. A pipe supplies cold water, and pipes also take hot water to your home’s appliances and taps. There are different designs available, but most water heaters in the US use a holding tank fueled by electricity or gas.

Safety and Maintenance

There are certain procedures you should follow to keep your water heater running safely, such as:

* Having regular inspections. There is glass on the inside of your water tank to prevent rust, but the outside of the tank is vulnerable. Watch for flaking paint, leaks and corrosion.

* Periodically draining the water heater’s tank to remove sediment, and asking a professional to test the thermostat and pressure valve to ensure safe operation

New Jersey backpedals on proposed bikini waxing ban

New Jersey backpedals on proposed bikini waxing ban

Saturday, March 21, 2009

New Jersey has reversed its plans for a state-wide ban on bikini waxing after salon owners from across the state spoke out against the proposal.

The New Jersey Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling planned to consider a ban on so-called “Brazilian waxes” in response to two women who reported being injured during a wax.

But state Consumer Affairs Director David Szuchman, who oversees the board, asked them to abandon the ban in favor of reviewing and establishing safeguards for those who provide the service.

“Many commentators have noted that the procedure could be safely performed,” Szuchman wrote in a letter to state board President Ronald Jerome Brown, according to the Asbury Park Press. “I, therefore, believe that there are alternative means to address any public health issues identified by the board.

Salon owners from across the state expressed relief with Szuchman’s decision.

“It was an unnecessary issue,” spa owner Linda Orsuto told the Associated Press. “In New Jersey especially, where the government has been picking our pockets for so long, it was like, ‘Just stay out of our pants, will you?'”

Although millions of Americans get bikini waxes, which generally cost between $50 and $60 per session, the practice comes with risks. Skin care experts say the hot wax can irritate delicate skin in the bikini area, and result in infections, ingrown hairs and rashes.

Waxing on the face, neck, abdomen, legs and arms are permitted in New Jersey. Although state statutes have always banned bikini waxing, the laws are seldom enforced because the wording is unclear.

If the measure had passed, New Jersey might have become the only US state to ban the practice outright.

Although Szuchman’s letter was crafted more as a recommendation than an order, media reports said the ban would likely never be approved without his support because his office oversees the board.

Eleven-day “Taiwan Run for UN” torch relay comes to an end

Eleven-day “Taiwan Run for UN” torch relay comes to an end

Monday, November 5, 2007

The torch line of the 11-day “Taiwan Run For UN” relay returned to Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei City yesterday. Taiwan’s president, Chen Shui-bian, launched the event as publicity and support for Taiwan’s application to join the United Nations as a new member under the name of “Taiwan”, alongside China. In a statement prior to the relay, Chen declared that “Taiwan and China are different countries across the Taiwan Strait.”

The relay covered more than 1,200 km through 25 cities and counties since its start on October 24. The organizer of the event, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) held night-time parties in the cities of Ilan, Hualien, Taitung, Pingtung, Kaohsiung, Tainan, Yunlin, Taichung, Miaoli, and Hsinchu as the relay progressed, and finally in Taipei City to welcome the torch relay team.

Shui-bian Chen, Annette Lu, Frank Hsieh (Taiwan’s 2008 presidential candidate), and Cheng-chang Su wore “UN for Taiwan” T-Shirts to the Ketagalan Boulevard rally, lit a flame and led people in a formation of “VT” (abbreviation for Victory Taiwan) line.

The rally was met with protesters from the Red Shirts, which complain of corruption in the Chen government. In addition, the China Unification Promotion Party attempted several aggressive actions but ultimately carried out a peaceful protest. Protesters had demonstrated previously, on October 24 at the start of the relay.

Even though the premier of Taiwan, Frank Hsieh insisted on the use of products made in Taiwan during the celebration party in Taipei, mini torch lights held by supporters were “Made in China” and featured the “MIC” mark, according to Eastern Television in Taiwan. These were eventually removed by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The use of Made in China products was criticized by DPP legislator Kuo-ching Lin after the television reports.

The party ended with a queue of “VT” lines and a historical collection of two million signatures of support. The issue of Taiwan’s application to the UN may become a variable in the upcoming 2008 Taiwan Presidential Election.

Benefits Of Using Fireplace Inserts

byadmin

Using a fireplace can help cut heating costs in the winter, and it’s nice to be able to sit in front of the fireplace and enjoy the warmth and the view of the flames. However, a regular fireplace isn’t that energy efficient and can take a lot of work to maintain. It’s sometimes a better option to purchase Fireplace Inserts for a home’s fireplaces from a company such as Thefireplaceguys.com.

Less Expensive Than a New Fireplace

Old fireplaces are only about 5 to 10 percent efficient and can be dangerous if not properly maintained. In some cases, the only safe way to use a fireplace is to replace it or get an insert. Inserts are much more affordable than totally redoing the fireplace and chimney.

Choose Fuel Type

Depending on the type of insert a person chooses, they can use wood, pellets, propane, coal, or natural gas as fuel. Gas will quickly heat up any room, but wood or pellets are more environmentally-friendly options. Wood burning inserts can be used even if the power goes out, which isn’t the case with other types of inserts, but then a person needs to deal with hauling wood. Gas and propane inserts have the least maintenance, as they don’t need to regularly be cleaned or have the ashes removed. For the least emissions, choose an EPA-certified wood burning insert, which has almost zero emissions.

More Efficient

Putting Fireplace Inserts into the fireplaces of a home can increase their efficiency by over 40 percent, depending on the type of insert chosen. They get rid of down drafts that can cause cold air to enter a home and add insulation to the home, so they help decrease heating and cooling costs even when they’re not in use. Because of the improved design of an insert over a fireplace, they also allow a room to be heated up to three times longer with the same amount of fuel.

Many Styles to Choose From

There are a number of different styles of inserts, making it so a person can choose the one that best suits the style of the room where it will be placed. This means the fireplace will be an attractive part of the home and enhance the look of the room instead of detracting from it.

IRA assets worth 30 million pounds investigated

IRA assets worth 30 million pounds investigated

Thursday, October 6, 2005

The British Assets Recovery Agency is investigating £30 million / €44 million of assets believed to be owned by senior members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA or IRA), using information provided by the Irish Criminal Assets Bureau and British and Irish law enforcement agencies. The money is believed to represent a small fraction of the wealth obtained by the organisation. This move follows the recent decommissioning of IRA weapons. Most of the assets are believed to have been owned by the IRA chief of staff, Thomas Murphy and businessman Dermot Craven. Now that negotiations over weapons decommissioning are over, it is believed that other IRA members who have become rich through running protection rackets or other criminal activities may also be stripped of their illegal assests in the forthcoming weeks.

Irish Justice Minister Michael McDowell said: “An Garda Síochána and the PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) and the Criminal Assets Bureau and the ARA are co-operating in every possible way to ensure that on this island those who have control of the proceeds of crime are deprived of those proceeds”. Businesses and organisations paying money towards protection rackets are hoping that the structure of the IRA will now begin to unravel.

India: Maharashtra plastic ban comes into force

India: Maharashtra plastic ban comes into force
By Admin | Posted in Uncategorized

Monday, June 25, 2018

On Saturday, the plastic ban in the Indian state of Maharashtra came into force. In an attempt to minimise pollution, the state government has introduced a ban on single-use plastics.

The leader of the Yuya Sena political party, Aaditya Thackeray, said on Twitter, “The ban on single use disposable plastic cups, plastic bags, plastic straws, plastic plates and cutlery, styrofoam cutlery and non woven bags”. He added, “these are global issues now and we have taken a step to combat it”.

Plastic pollution has led to the choking of drains, marine pollution and a risk of animals consuming plastics. This year, India’s motto for World Environment Day — June 5 — was “Beat Plastic Pollution”. People violating the plastic ban are to face a fine of 5,000 Indian Rupees (INR) for the first offence. For the second offence, the fine is INR 10,000 and the third time offence is INR 25,000 and a three-month prison term. Deputy municipal commissioner Nidhi Choudhary said, “To weed out corruption, we plan to give inspectors payment gadgets for electronic receipts of the fines”.

The Maharashtra government has given a 90-day period for manufacturers to dispose of existing polyethylene terephthalate (PET/PETE) plastic spoons and plates, while shopkeepers and citizens in general have six months to dispose of plastics. However, the ban does not prohibit plastic usage for wrapping medicines or milk cartons thicker than 50 microns.

The state government had announced the decision for the plastic ban on March 23. According to NDTV’s report, Maharashtra is the eighteenth Indian state to enforce a state-wide plastic ban. Aaditya Thackeray also said, “I congratulate the citizens for making this into a movement, even before the ban was enforceable, giving up single use disposable plastic.”
