India enters second day of a two-day nationwide general strike

Wednesday, March 30, 2022

Yesterday, India entered the second day of a two-day nationwide general strike organised by a forum of central trade unions along with numerous other regional trade unions. Hundreds of protestors were seen with red flags in Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, a place frequently used for protests.

The protestors claimed that the economic policies under the current Indian government led by Narendra Modi were hurting the unorganised sector of the country. Swadesh Dev Roye, a top official of Centre of Indian Trade Unions in a statement said that the Modi government “wants to hide its economic criminality under the garb of communalism and religion”.

The protestors demanded job security in the unorganised sector, increased wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and scrapping of the National Monetisation Pipeline which would give employers more freedom in deciding working hours and wages.

Some protestors were also demanding the halt of plans to privatise two public sector banks. The Modi government has been privatising many public sector institutions to stimulate economic growth in the country.

Amarjeet Kaur, general secretary of All India Trade Union Congress reported that over 20 crore (200 million) protestors had participated on the first day. Banks, markets, and railway services were affected.

India saw a major setback to its economy in the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. The unemployment rate in the country was reported to be eight percent in December last year.

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

How To Increase The Value In Your Home By Simply Raising Your Bathroom Vanity In Miami

byAlma Abell

Interestingly enough, there are a lot of changes that have been made in the world of home building and construction over the past 40 years and design is not the only improvement. While there ’s decoration, mainly those items are a thing of the past. Another big improvement over the years has been the height in which amenities are built. Consider the height of a Bathroom Vanity in Miami for instance to get a clear indication as to the year your home was built.

The bones of a home, meaning the structures that can not be changed or if they need remodeling will require a loan amount the size of the home purchase itself, are not necessarily needed to update a house. Any investor or real estate agent will tell you however, that if you want to get equity out of the home, certain conditions must be upgraded throughout the home. One thing to consider is the height at which electrical outlets are placed and counters and cabinets height. Perhaps the population has steadily gotten taller, but these items in older homes have typically been located for a low reach potential.

While it may not seem like an easy task off hand, there are simple ways to upgrade the entire home on a budget in order to raise up counters and cabinets to a more functional and desirable height. You may not hear a lot about increasing the equity in a home by improving the height of say, a Bathroom Vanity in Miami, but it does make a difference to a potential buyer. Explore options at www.bathtrendsusa.com for a comparison of new construction designs.

A years of functional use out of them or sell the home for a much more comparable price to newer homes in your area.

Death toll from Borneo bridge collapse reaches eleven

Death toll from Borneo bridge collapse reaches eleven

Monday, November 28, 2011

The death toll from the weekend suspension bridge collapse on the Indonesian island of Borneo has risen from four to eleven. Search and rescue teams continue to look for bodies in the Mahakam River.

The number of wounded is currently 39 injured; reports from locals suggest 33 people remain missing at the scene in East Kalimantan’s Kutai Kartanegara district, where “Kalimantan’s Golden Gate Bridge” linked the towns of Tenggarong and the regional capital, Samarinda. A six-month-old baby is among the dead.

Cars, motorbikes, and buses all fell into the Mahakam River when the bridge came down during repairs. Another car was left overturned and balanced upon wreckage over the water. State-owned builders PT Hutama Karya completed the bridge about a decade ago in the image of California’s Golden Gate Bridge. A cable on the 720-metre structure is thought to have failed as workers dealt with it; six of the repair crew were reported missing yesterday. It had been the longest suspension bridge in Borneo.

Eyewitnesses described heavy traffic at the time of the collapse, and one survivor said he left his truck to investigate a traffic jam. Some people were left trapped by debris as the bridge came down. “It happened so fast, only about 30 seconds,” according to National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Nugoroho.

National search and rescue head Daryatmo said yesterday cranes will attempt to move debris today, with new reports saying echo-sounding equipment will be used to check it is safe to begin lifting. It is believed the bodies of more victims will be found trapped in vehicles beneath the water, which is 35-40 metres deep. Visibility is poor, and one official explained authorities are still unsure how many vehicles are on the riverbed.

“The above-water search is continuing, but underwater operations have not been carried out because we’re worried that the bridge’s pylons are unstable and could collapse any time,” said Nugoroho today. He explained that bodies had washed onto the riverbanks overnight and were recovered today.

The president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has sent three ministers to the site to investigate the accident, while Bambang Widaryatmo, head of East Kalimantan’s police, promised “parties found to be negligent will be prosecuted”. The government has promised a replacement ferry service. The river is closed to boats as rescue operations continue, and a 22-strong team has been dispatched from the national police, comprising six forensics experts, five disaster victim identification specialists, and eleven investigators. They are there to augment the East Kalimantan Police. Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih yesterday visited survivors in Parikesit Hospital and promised them medical treatment at government expense.

Some people swam ashore after falling, with the aftermath filled with screams. Survivor Syakrani, 24, yesterday asserted “The authorities should have closed the bridge if it was under repair.” His words were followed by a Jakarta Globe editorial declaring the accident “unacceptable”.

The Globe went on to comment upon suggestions corruption may have played a role; “It is too early to point fingers and look to place blame, but if shoddy materials were used in the building of the bridge, those responsible must answer to the public.” Another suggestion is coal barges striking the bridge may have weakened it. Local coal company Harum Energy lost five percent of its share value today amid fears the river blockage will hamper their ability to ship coal.

Samarinda’s seen a population and construction boom lately. A few years have seen the population triple and the construction of a large mosque, and a sports stadium; an airport and port are set to follow. However, the Corruption Eradication Commission warns 70% of the corruption it investigates concerns government contracts and up to 40% of money earmarked for infrastructure ends up stolen.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

">
Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Australian Police alerted to child-sex claims at St Stanislaus in 1997

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Following the escalation of investigations into St Stanislaus College in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, Wikinews has obtained a police statement from an alleged victim made in 1997 against priest Brian Joseph Spillane. Spillane is facing 33 charges relating to the allegations.

It had been believed that Bathurst detectives set up Strike Force Header after receiving a complaint from a former St Stanislaus student last year. The complainant came to the police’s attention after he came to Bathurst handing out fliers documenting alleged abuses at the school and providing a link to a website he had set up. St Stanislaus College contacted police and asked them to investigate. Police contacted the alleged victim and asked him if he would like to make a complaint.

In the statement obtained by Wikinews, the same man complained to detectives at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia about abuse by Spillane at St Stanislaus. In the graphic statement, he describes abuse which began following a poker game with the priest at the centre of the allegations. The statement describes further abuses spanning several months.

Bathurst Police refused to comment when contacted about the statement today.

How To Finance Or Refinance A Motorcycle Loan

By Claire Calkin

How to obtain a motorcycle loan

If you want to get a loan for your motorcycle or refinance a current loan, follow our simple advice to get you back on the road. Never mind public opinion, obtaining a motorcycle loan can be a straightforward and easy process if you follow the correct procedure. The refinance company or motorcycle loan company can usually get back to you straight away to offer you their best interest rates. When you know what interest rates and repayments will be you can then calculate accordingly how much this will cost you. If you can afford this and think it is at a good rate then you have got another step underway. Check the terms and conditions to make sure there are no hidden costs or extra add ons. When you have found the best package to suit you, then you can send in your application online or over the phone. Even after the application is sent in, you do not have to commit to this. The company will make a customised package for you to work from. It is recommended to stay with you current company if the interest rates will not help you save money and reduce fees or penalties. Many people can usually obtain a secure interest rate if they refinance so it is always good to send applications in so you can compare different companies and find the best one for you.

Getting the best motorcycle loans rates

The number of months the loan is for, your credit report score, and the price you pay in total for the motorcycle are all factors that can determine the final rate of interest of your motorcycle loan. The company that may lend you the money will rank your credit history is the main criteria of your loan rate. The less you have to pay in interest rates the higher your credit score is. It is ideal to check your credit rating before you apply for a loan and make sure all information is correct or otherwise you may be paying a lot more than you should have to. The number of months you apply to pay of your loan could determine whether you pay more or less. The longer the months the more interest that will be paid. A motorcycle loan taken out for 6o months will have a lower monthly interest rate than a 36 months loan but the overall total for the 60 month loan will be larger. The price paid in total for your loan including dealer adds ons can also determine interest rates. When you research and know the value of your motorcycle you can stop yourself from overpaying the motorcycle loan payments. If you are buying a new motorcycle check the dealers invoice or price he paid for the motorcycle is before you head to the dealer. The best price is between the dealers price and the dealers invoice price. The dealer will always add money on so they can make a profit but it is far greater than the price they brought it for. Lowering the price of your motorcycle could mean lowering the repayments too.

When purchasing a used motorcycle from a local dealer be aware that the dealer will price the motorcycle at the highest value and this may include the cost of the dealer having the motorcycle reconditioned. Try to find a compromise with the dealer on what is a reasonable price for a bike in your area. The dealer has an asking price is always far more than they may have paid for it, as they like to make a heavy profit. Look around and check out all motorcycle dealers to find a deal that is best for you. When a dealer offers you an option that may be not necessarily needed, take account that this will add to the total value of the motorcycle and increase the repayments and interest rate. Some options that you may be asked to take are sales promotion fund, paint sealant, freight expense, assembly charge and dealer advertising association holdbacks. Compare the best deals that may include these options for the best deal for you. Some options can be removed for an even better price on your motorcycle.

Fears grow about U.S. dollar stability

">
Fears grow about U.S. dollar stability

Thursday, September 20, 2007

The U.S. economy and its currency as an instrument of world trade has suffered a series of major setbacks in recent months. Some analysts say that the Federal Reserve‘s September 18th dramatic rate cut to 4.75% from 5.25% may be a case of “too little, too late”, or that it was excessive and dooms the dollar.

Today, Saudi officials declined to cut interest rates in lockstep with the US Federal Reserve for the first time in decades. According to Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, International Business Editor for The Daily Telegraph, “it’s a signal that the oil-rich Gulf kingdom is preparing to break the dollar currency peg in a move that risks setting off a stampede out of the dollar across the Middle East.”

Hans Redeker, the Currency Chief at BNP Paribas, also stated today that Saudi Arabia’s move to not adjust their own interest rates in sync with the Fed’s cuts is a very dangerous situation for the US dollar. Redeker points out that “Saudi Arabia has $800bn (£400bn) in their future generation fund, and the entire region has $3,500bn under management. They face an inflationary threat and do not want to import an interest rate policy set for the recessionary conditions in the United States.”

Saudi central bank officials said that “appropriate measures” would be taken to stop the large capital inflows into the country. The Federal Reserve’s half-point rate cut has already caused a plunge in the world dollar index to a fifteen-year low, reaching the weakest level ever against the Euro at just under $1.40.

The Fed hopes that by making it cheaper to borrow, people will start spending and investing more. However, some analysts fear the cut will worsen inflation, making it harder to get personal loans, and further decrease confidence in the dollar around the world. There are already signs that global investors have started rejecting U.S. Treasury securities, and recent U.S. government data on foreign holdings show a decline in purchases of US securities from $97bn to just $19bn in July.

In response to Ben Bernanke‘s statements today about a potential mortgage and housing market crisis, CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer said, “If adjustable mortgage rates go up, people may not be able to afford their mortgage payments.” Former Federal Reserve chief Alan Greenspan said earlier this week that housing prices may fall by “double digits” as the subprime crisis bites harder, prompting households to cut back sharply on spending.

Jim Rogers, the economic commentator and former partner of George Soros, stated, “If Ben Bernanke starts running those printing presses even faster than he’s already doing, we are going to have a serious recession. The dollar’s going to collapse, the bond market’s going to collapse. There’s going to be a lot of problems.”

In recent months, the U.S. dollar has taken several other significant hits including Kuwait’s decision in May to also break its dollar peg, and threats by China to interfere with the U.S. economy, calling it their nation’s “nuclear option”. According to public sources, the Chinese government has begun a concerted campaign of economic threats against the United States, hinting that it may liquidate its vast holding of US treasuries if Washington imposes trade sanctions that seek to force a Yuan revaluation.

401st Guy Fawkes celebrated in parts of the Commonwealth

401st Guy Fawkes celebrated in parts of the Commonwealth
By Admin | Posted in Uncategorized

Sunday, November 5, 2006

November 5, is Guy Fawkes Night. On this day, 401 years ago there was an attempt to blow up the British parliament.

Since that time, Guy Fawkes day is celebrated by bonfires, fireworks and the parading of effigies called “guys”.

The event is not only celebrated in the United Kingdom, but other Commonwealth countries including New Zealand, South Africa, Newfoundland, Bahamas, Saint Kitts and formerly Australia.

Britons celebrate a national day of thanksgiving that the Gunpowder plot did not destroy their king and parliament. But as tradition goes, the oppression that Roman Catholics felt was always de-emphasised.

This year sees rising opposition to the traditional fireworks and bonfires celebrations. A smog warning has been issued for London on the 5th and British Labour MP Barry Sheerman called for the event to be scrapped.

Valencia is famous for its wine production; many of its wines are exported overseas for use in restaurants, or for personal use. Valencias weather climate and soil consistencies form the perfect conditions for wine production.

Wine is a delicacy to be served with meals and on special occasions. Valencia is well known for its fiestas and celebrations throughout the year, so wine is often a part Valencias lifestyle.

Knowing which type of wine to select with your meal, or to give as a present is important, as you will want to compliment your dinner with the right wine, or surprise your guest with a wine that suits their tastes.

Essentially, there are types of wine and all of some of these are more suitable to certain types of foods than others. White wines usually go well with white meat dishes, such as fish and chicken, while red wines traditionally go with red meat and pasta dishes.

Generally, there are sweet and dry wines, which can be found in both white and red wine varieties. If you are looking for a sweet white wine you might choose a Riesling. Leaving the grapes on the grape vines for a longer period of time makes sweet wines.

When looking for a sweet red wine you might try a merlot, or a cabernet sauvignon, both of which a delightful sweet red wine varieties. If looking for a dry white wine, you might try a Pinot Noir, or Sauvignon Blanc and if looking for a dry red wine you might try a Shiraz.

All wines should be chilled either in a fridge, or bucket of ice, prior to drinking, as this allows you to derive the most benefit from the wines flavors and experience. Also, most consumable wines are designed to be drunk within a few years from being made, so if you are buying wine for your cellar, keep this in mind.

Well, now that you know a little bit more about wines, you can enjoy Valencias wines by making the right choices. Valencia wines can be sampled in its many restaurants and also at the Spanish Wine Festival, known as the La Rioja Wine Festival.

The La Rioja Wine Festival Wine Festival is a celebration of Spanish wines and, during this time, there are events and wine tasting, dinners and lots of merriment. Valencia also holds many fiestas throughout the year, which feature food and wine, such as the La Tomatina Fiesta and the Fiesta Fallas de San Jose.
