US Soccer: Seattle Sounders fall to LA Galaxy 1-0

Monday, April 13, 2015

California-based soccer club LA Galaxy triumphed 1–0 over Seattle Sounders FC of Washington yesterday with a header from Alan Gordon.

Both sides were missing a key player; Clint Dempsey was out for the Sounders with a hamstring injury while Robbie Keane missed the match with a groin injury. This was LA’s first win since opening day and are now 2-2-2 while Seattle experienced their second loss of the season and stand at 2-2-1.

Seattle had ten opportunities on the night saved by Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo. Lamar Neagle could not find the back of the net with four on target. In the 53rd minute Sounders’ Rose had a clear shot against goal; Penedo again made the save when the ball was struck directly at the keeper.

The lone goal started with a cross from Juninho on the right side which found center back Omar Gonzalez. He was able to head the ball back to Gordon who then easily scored. This ended a goal drought for LA who were scoreless for 290 minutes, last scoring on March 21 against Houston.

LA next face Sporting Kansas City at home while the Sounders continue their road trip to the Colorado Rapids.

Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.

Seo Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance

By Chris Angus

There is a “Six P” acronym that says, “Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance.” Very often, the first twenty percent of the time that you will spend developing your site will save you eighty percent of the time later in achieving the business goals you’ve set later. This is exactly why so many SEO experts and SEO gurus say that having a good business plan and web design is crucial to SEO strategy.

One mistakes that beginning netpreneurs often make is thinking of Internet business as not being ‘real business.’ One of the biggest mistakes you can make as a beginner is to not sit down and figure out how much your business will cost you to set up, how much it will cost you per day to maintain, how money you can expect to make in a day and how you expect it to expand.

Your business plan basically serves two purposes:

1. It is a promotional tool that is used to interest others in financing or becoming involved in your business

2. It is a personal map full of touchstones and guideposts that reveals exactly how and when you will reach your business goals.

A business plan precisely defines your business, identifies your goals, and serves as your firm’s resume. The basic three basic components of a well-structured business plan are:

1. A balance sheet that describes both current and projected profits

2. An income statement

3. A cash flow analysis

A well thought out business plan can be your best ally in the future assisting you with making good business decisions especially when it comes to deciding the how’s, when’s and where’s of allocating your resources. It can also save you time and trouble when it comes to allocating money to an SEO strategy as the best thought out sites tend to be more focused and naturally niched and therefore need less SEO in general.

Lawsuits filed against students accused of illegally sharing files over the Internet2

Lawsuits filed against students accused of illegally sharing files over the Internet2

Thursday, April 14, 2005

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has filed 405 lawsuits against students at 18 colleges across the US. The RIAA says these students were illegally sharing songs and films over the Internet2. They claim that 3,900 songs were available on the network. The RIAA said that each person sued downloaded an average of 2,300 songs.

The MPAA has also filed several lawsuits, against students, but has declined to comment on the number of students sued. The MPAA claim that users of the Internet2 had swapped 99 terabytes of films per day. This is more then 15,000 full length films.

The Internet2 is a high speed network used by 207 US universities. It was designed to provide a high speed alternative for researchers and other educators to share information. The Internet2 allows for very high speed connections — a film can be downloaded in as little as 30 seconds, compared with approximately six hours over other high-speed connections, such as DSL.

Cary Sherman the president of the Recording Industry Association of America is quoted as saying that “Internet2 is increasingly becoming the network of choice for students looking to steal songs and other copyrighted works on a massive scale”.

Some have raised the issue of how the RIAA and MPAA gained access to the network, as it is a closed network environment for universities only. The Internet2 does not know how they gained access as they have not given them access or handed over any data. The RIAA will not say how it did the monitoring, but claims it was entirely legal.

A spokesperson for the Internet2 told the Los Angeles Times that copyright infringement is prohibited under its rules, though its chief executive, Doug Van Houweling, in a separate interview admitted that he is aware that there is a lot of file-sharing going on. He also stated that it is possible to filter traffic so as to block illegal activity; however, it would slow the network’s performance and they will not be doing it.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

Seven Voice Saving Techniques To Live By

Seven Voice-Saving Techniques to Live By

by

Most of us would be horrified if our voice was hoarse or altogether gone on the morning of an important speech. So often, we take our healthy voices for granted. Not having a well-functioning voice every day can lead to serious consequences.

A few years ago, a colleague of mine was preparing for a job interview that had come down to him and one other candidate. The job was an upper management position that required a lot of new responsibilities including being in the public eye more frequently and giving high profile presentations. Zach was perfect for this position and obviously well-prepared for the interview. He wanted this job desperately!

The night before the interview, he and his best buddy attended a sports event in the city. His exuberance for his favorite team could not be held back. He cheered and yelled with his typical energy and enthusiasm.

He had never lost his voice before doing this so he was surprised the next day when he woke up and discovered his hoarse, gravelly-sounding voice. He called me immediately and asked me what he should do.

Besides vocally resting that day and keeping well-hydrated, there wasn’t too much that he could do on the short term. Later that day, Zach interviewed hoarse voice and all. Unfortunately, he didn’t end up getting that position.

Zach has wondered if his hoarseness partly played a role in that decision. Because of the importance of clear, articulate speech for spokespersons, Zach may have lost the job to the other candidate had the two been equal in all of their other qualifications.

There are many reasons why some people become hoarse or completely lose their voice: physical problems which we may or may not have any control over or behavioural which are activities we engage in that we do have control over.

Are you aware of the voice problems that go along with each season?

If you suffer from spring allergies, then you know all about problems with watery eyes, coughing, sneezing and nasal congestion. Both coughing and post-nasal drip cause irritation and inflammation to the vocal cords.

Fluctuations in humidity levels affect our voice in the summer and winter. This is because we move from our air conditioned or heated businesses and homes into the outside weather. An inviting room to be in this winter will be where chestnuts roast on an open fire. But the heat from the fire drains the humidity from the air.

And no matter what the season, we may abuse our vocal cords by yelling too loudly for our favorite sports teams.

All of these activities can be vocally harmful so arm yourself with a few strategies to avoid hoarseness or a loss of voice:

1. Keep your water handy. Drink 8-10 glasses a day to keep your vocal cords well-hydrated to combat any of the above problems.

2. Avoid alcohol (it has a drying effect) especially while cheering at your favorite sports event and caffeine.

3. Practice techniques to alleviate tension along the vocal tract (face, tongue, neck, shoulders, and vocal cords).

4. Decrease how much you yell in your home environment and elsewhere to preserve your voice.

5. Add humidity to the air when possible.

6. Rest your voice several times throughout the day.

7. Seek medical attention to reduce your allergy symptoms.

With this knowledge you can reduce or eliminate the negative effects of the environment on your vocal cords and remain vocally healthy for your job! Guard yourself against the devastation of losing your voice at work.

Suspects apprehended after car chase through Denver, US

Tuesday, August 30, 2005

A high-speed pre-dawn pursuit on 29 August, 2005 ended in a fatal accident. A local resident reported to police at 1:00 am (local time) that two people appeared to be attempting to steal a Honda Civic near West 75th Circle in Westminster, Colorado. As the two individuals left the scene in the stolen car, the resident followed in his own vehicle until the passenger stepped out of the Honda and opened fire with a shotgun. The police came upon the suspects near West 72nd Avenue & Pierce Street, Arvada, Colorado, and began pursuit.

The chase proceeded southbound on Sheridan Boulevard and northeast on Interstate 76, reaching speeds of 120 miles per hour (190 kilometres per hour). When the vehicle attempted to merge onto southeast-bound I-270 in Commerce City, Colorado the suspects lost control and impacted two other vehicles.

The stolen vehicle may have punctured one or more tires, as sparks were observed from the bottom of the car as it began the merge. The stolen car struck the middle of the passenger’s side of a Toyota 4Runner in the left-hand lane and sent it careening across the median into the northwest-bound lanes of traffic, where it rolled several times. The stolen vehicle then bounced off the guardrail on the right shoulder and impacted a Ford pickup truck before coming to rest. The two suspects then escaped on foot, discarding some of their clothing as they fled. One of the passengers traveling in the Toyota 4Runner, Brian Kapko, 19, of Costa Mesa, California, was killed.

After eight hours of searching for the perpetrators, the police called off their manhunt. Later in the day, a witness alerted the police about two “suspicious persons” near the scene of the accident. The police arrested a Matthew G. Wartena, 19, and a 16 year old male. Wartena was wearing only boxer shorts, socks and a bloody tank top. The juvenile wore only one sock and tan pants. The pair were charged with suspicion of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, vehicular eluding, and criminal trespass. At the time of the incident Wartena was free on bond, having pleaded guilty the month before to forgery of a government document.

Stabilized forest fires in Greece intensify again; 2 arrested

Sunday, August 26, 2007

The huge forest fires that blazed across southern Greece on Friday and Saturday were stabilized for a few hours today.

Fire Brigade Officer Nikos Tsogas said, “It’s not getting worse…we have to act fast because the winds might pick up.” However, the winds have reportedly intensified. Fire department spokesman Nikos Diamandis said, “Unfortunately the improvement that we were looking for is not there…Our target is for the fire not to enter Ancient Olympia, not to destroy antiquities.” Fire is surrounding villages just a few miles away from Ancient Olympia.

Several new fires also broke out today in Phiotida in central Greece. The worst fires continue to burn in the southern mountains of Peloponnese, where some blazes involve 42 major fronts.

The fires have killed at least 63 people. Some reports indicate that an unspecified number are also missing.

Meanwhile, Greek authorities announced that they have made two arrests in the case. The first, a 65-year-old man, was reportedly seen torching trees across southern Peloponnese. The second person arrested and charged was a 77-year-old woman who reportedly was seen starting a fire while cooking outside in Zaharo. The Associated Press reports seven other people have been detained.

Officer Tsogas said authorities are investigating reports of a cell phone attached to an explosive gas canister found after a smaller fire in mountain Ymittos in Athens.Greek private TV station “mega channel” has reported that more than one fire-starting mechanisms connected to cell phones have been found by volunteering citizens that are trying to help the authorities.

Meanwhile the government has announced rewards ranging from 100,000 euros to one million euros for information on arsonists involved in this week’s barrage of wildfire ravaging much of southern Greece.

The Greek government has declared a state of emergency.

At least 12 European countries are sending aid and resources.

Rachel Weisz wants Botox ban for actors

English actress Rachel Weisz thinks that Botox injections should be banned for all actors.

The 39-year-old actress, best known for her roles in the Mummy movie franchise and for her Academy Award-winning portrayal in The Constant Gardener, feels facial Botox injections leave actors less able to convey emotion and that it harms the acting industry as much as steroids harm athletes.

In an interview with UK’s Harper’s Bazaar, coming out next month, Weisz says, “It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen,” she claims. “Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?”

Currently living in New York, she also mentions that English women are much less worried about their physical appearance than in the United States. “I love the way girls in London dress,” she claimed. “It’s so different to the American ‘blow-dry and immaculate grooming’ thing.”
