Scientist demands end to US ‘addiction to oil’

Thursday, October 21, 2010

A scientist for the National Wildlife Federation, Doug Inkley, has criticised what he described as America’s “addiction to oil”. Inkley stated it is ultimately responsible for the Deepwater Horizon disaster earlier this year.

Inkley commented on the incident, six months after the explosion which killed eleven rig workers and resulted in over 170 million gallons of crude oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico causing damage to marine wildlife habitats as well as the Gulf’s fishing and tourism industries.

Inkley is a senior scientist working for the National Wildlife Federation. He stated, “Looking back at what we knew six months after the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska illustrates the danger of too quickly drawing conclusions about the full impacts of the Gulf oil disaster.”

“Six months after the Exxon Valdez disaster,” he continued, “the herring stocks in Prince William Sound seemed like they’d pull through. It wasn’t until the fourth year after the disaster that herring stocks collapsed due to a delayed population effect of the oil, devastating the people and wildlife that depended on them. Today, more than two decades later, this once-vital fish still hasn’t recovered.”

The aftershocks of the Gulf oil disaster will continue to cast a long shadow of uncertainty on the Gulf ecosystem and the livelihoods of those who depend upon it for years to come

His remarks echo those issued by another environmental organisation in July. Greenpeace demanded that BP, who the United States Congress has blamed for the disaster, take a “new direction” and end an “obsession with high risk, environmentally reckless sources of oil.”

A spokesperson for Greenpeace said, “[t]he moment has come for BP to move beyond oil. Under Tony Hayward the company went backwards, squeezing the last drops of oil from places like the Gulf of Mexico, the tar sands of Canada and even the fragile Arctic wilderness […] The age of oil is coming to an end and companies like BP will be left behind unless they begin to adapt now.” Statistics show that the United States is by far the largest consumer of oil, using 20,680,000 barrels every day. Its closest rival, China, consumes only 7,578,000 barrels per day.

Inkley said incidents in the past showed there can be far-reaching effects. “The Exxon Valdez disaster was not simply one ecosystem earthquake – the aftershocks have continued to this day,” he said, citing the 1989 disaster which occurred when an oil tanker ran aground in the Gulf of Alaska.

“What tremors are still to come in the Gulf? The aftershocks of the Gulf oil disaster will continue to cast a long shadow of uncertainty on the Gulf ecosystem and the livelihoods of those who depend upon it for years to come,” pointed out Inkley. Adding, “[a]s I look back on my days in Louisiana’s wetlands wading through thick black oil in prime pelican habitat, I continue to wonder: How long must we wait for lawmakers to act to prevent future disasters? How many more lives, livelihoods and animals must be claimed by our addiction to oil?”

The Cost Of Slim Band Surgery In Canada: Cheaper Than In The United States

By Pete Malcolm

With more and more people becoming obese and having problems losing their extra weight, a surgical option is available. While the procedure has impressing results, it is expensive. The procedure is less costly in other countries, so many people travel abroad to have it done. The cost of slim band surgery in Canada, while cheaper, can vary depending on a few factors. It is the least expensive country to have the weight-loss procedure done and many choose to have it done there.

Slim band surgery provides the patient with impressive results, being performed since 1992 on obese patients. A lap band is implanted in the patient’s stomach, limiting the quantity of food that is consumed. This makes the patient’s stomach smaller and allows them to become full more quickly. This procedure has a very high success rate.

Canada is a popular choice for many since the cost of slim band surgery in Canada is less expensive than in the United States. The procedure starts around $10,000, which compares to $13,000 in the United States. There are many additional things that can add to the cost, like the level of obesity of the person. The overhead costs are lower in Canada, which is why it is cheaper.

When getting an estimate on the cost of slim band surgery in Canada, it is essential that various medical facilities are called. Make sure to ask if all costs are inclusive. Some facilities may have hidden fees, like pre-operative exams, surgeon’s fees and post-operative care. So, doing research and asking questions is imperative.

A few other factors should be considered, other than the price. There will be extra fees for airline tickets, renting a car and staying in a hotel. All of these costs should be factored in, as these will drive the cost of the procedure up and may make it more expensive than just having it done in the United States. If that is the case, then it is more sensible to just have it done at home.

For those that have health insurance, the procedure may be covered if done in the United States. If that is the case, there is no logical reason to make the trip abroad for the procedure. For those that do not have any health insurance, there are Canadian benefits that are free, which one may be eligible for.

Some other relevant things to consider are the level of experience that the doctor performing the procedure has. It is also essential to determine the level of care that will be given before and after having the procedure done. The level of care should be adequate for total recovery and to minimize any complications.

It is vital to weight all pros and cons related to the procedure when evaluating the cost of slim band surgery in Canada. There are many factors that are essential and must be considered before making the decision to have the procedure done. While it is effective, there are possibilities of complications. Having the procedure done allows many to get a handle on their weight and become a healthier person.

The Important Steps To Follow When Looking For Windshield Repair

byAlma Abell

Are you looking for windshield repair in Dallas? Here are four important things you must think about.

Take a photo

This should be the first step as soon as you realize there is a crack in the windshield. With a picture, if the insurance asks for a detailed description of the damage, you will be able to send them the exact picture. Furthermore, it makes sense to be able to produce evidence in case for whatever reason the insurance guys refuse to pay for the windshield repair.

The extent of the damage

The next step should be the determination of the nature of the damage. Obviously, the extent of the damage will determine such things as the expenditure during repair, how urgent the repairs must be sought and whether driving will be safe, or even possible before the repair job. Experts advise an actual measuring of the crack to determine whether repair is prudent or whether there is need to replace the windshield altogether. The rule of thumb is that if the crack is less than 6 inches long, then repair is the wisest way to go. More than 6 inches then repair could the wise move.

Insurance claim

After taking a detailed photo and measuring the crack, the next step should be the filing of an insurance claim. Many auto repair shops should be able to handle insurance, meaning you will not have to stress yourself any more than necessary. If this is not the case with your auto repair shop, you normally must do it yourself. If your cover is comprehensive enough then you will have no problems with this step.

The actual repair

The last step is the most important, going to the auto repair shop and making an appointment. With a small crack, the best auto repair shops will likely be able to fit you in on the same day and have the repair done fast. If the glass is too huge to drive safe, then call the auto glass shop and ask for mobile repair, a service that normally should not cost extra. It will be much safer for you and reduce the chances of the glass shattering further.

Auto glass repair has never been easier. At A & M, you get the very best in terms of professionals, parts and service. Visit our website today for more information.

Death toll from tsunami in Southeast Asia increases

Death toll from tsunami in Southeast Asia increases
Correction — May 8, 2018 This headline incorrectly locates the tsunami in Southeast Asia; it was in the South Pacific, as stated in the lede.

Thursday, October 1, 2009

A tsunami that was generated in the South Pacific by a powerful undersea earthquake has killed at least 110 people, according to authorities.

The majority of the fatalities occurred in Samoa, where rescue workers say at least 84 people were killed. Another 24 people are confirmed dead on American Samoa, while at least seven fatalities have been reported in nearby Tonga.

The US Geological Survey says an 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck early Tuesday local time. It generated waves that devastated coastal areas, knocked down buildings and sent cars floating out to sea.

Strong aftershocks followed the initial earthquake, with at least one measuring a magnitude 5.6. Tsunami alerts were issued for the entire South Pacific region but were later canceled. Survivors fled to high ground and stayed there for hours.

Several villages were destroyed on the southern Samoan coast of Upolu, which is also home to many tourist resorts.

During a flight on from Auckland, New Zealand to Apia, Samoa, Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi told reporters he was shocked by the disaster. “So much has gone. So many people are gone. I’m so shocked, so saddened by all the loss.”

“The situation is very bad,” said Marie-Francoise Borel, a spokesperson for the International Red Cross, to the CTV News Channel by telephone. “This massive wave has swept across – it’s destroyed villages, it’s destroyed homes, people are in shock.”

The assistant chief executive of Samoa’s disaster management predicted that the death toll in the country could surpass one hundred, saying that searches for bodies in the region are still ongoing.

“They are still continuing the searches for any missing bodies in the area. Some areas have been flattened and the tsunami had brought a lot of sand onshore, so there have been reports the sand has covered some of the bodies. So we need specialised machines to search for bodies that are buried under the sand,” he said.

The communications head for the International Federation of the Red Cross, Jason Smith, told the Al Jazeera news agency that the Red Cross “[…] is working hard through five evacuation centres to provide people with safe places to stay and access to clean water,” estimating that up to 15,000 people in sixty villages were affected by the tsunami.

At the capital of American Samoa, Pago Pago, the tsunami measured 1.57 meters in height. The superintendent of the National Park of American Samoa Mike Reynolds reported four waves as high as six meters. People who experienced the quake said it was long, lasting from 90 seconds to three minutes.

We’re focused on bringing in the assistance for people that have been injured, and for the immediate needs of the tens of thousands of survivors down there.

Pago Pago city streets were strewn with overturned vehicles, cars, and debris. Some buildings located only slightly above sea level were completely destroyed by the waves, and power in some locations is not expected to be restored for up to a month. FEMA administrator Craig Fugate said that “we’re focused on bringing in the assistance for people that have been injured, and for the immediate needs of the tens of thousands of survivors down there.”

“The first federal team members are currently en route to American Samoa aboard a Coast Guard plane and will be providing on the ground assessments once they arrive on the island,” Fugate said. “FEMA, who has provisions pre-positioned in a distribution center in Hawaii, is also preparing to send supplies as needed to help meet the immediate needs of the survivors.”

Didi Afuafi, 28, who was riding on a bus in American Samoa when the tsunami struck, described her experiences. “I was scared. I was shocked. All the people on the bus were screaming, crying and trying to call their homes. We couldn’t get on cell phones. The phones just died on us. It was just crazy,” she said. “This is going to be talked about for generations.”

US President Barack Obama declared a major disaster in American Samoa, and has sent federal aid to support local recovery efforts in the US territory.

“My deepest sympathies are with the families who lost loved ones and many people who have been affected by the earthquake and the tsunami,” Obama said. He had earlier pledged in a written statement to give a “swift and aggressive” government response to the disaster.

“I am closely monitoring these tragic events, and have declared a major disaster for American Samoa, which will provide the tools necessary for a full, swift and aggressive response,” Obama said.

During a Wednesday appearance near Washington, D.C., the president said the US was ready to help its “friends” in neighboring Samoa and throughout the region.

In Tonga, seven people were confirmed dead and another three missing, after waves struck Niuatoputapu, a northern island.Acting prime minister Lord Tuita said in a statement that “according to information gathered from Niuatoputapu so far, seven people are confirmed dead, three missing and four with very serious injuries,” Lord Tuita, the acting prime minister, said in a statement. “It is reported that the tsunami did serious damage to the village of Hihifo, which is like the capital of the island.

“The hospital on the island is reported to have suffered major damage; telephone communication has been cut as a result of damage to equipment and facilities on the island; homes and government buildings have been destroyed,” he said.

An airplane was reportedly chartered by Tongan authorities to determine the amount of damage done to Niuatoputapu, but wasn’t able to land.

Nokia Inc. announces plans for iPhone rival

Nokia Inc. announces plans for iPhone rival

Thursday, August 30, 2007

Announced early Wednesday morning at Nokia’s GoEvent, in a plan to expand the company’s revenue, Finland-based company Nokia Inc. is developing a mobile phone similar to its rival iPhone, which will be available in the near future for Nokia customers. The phone is expected to be available by 2008.

Most of the features are the same as the iPhone’s. They include music, games, and many other features, even ones that the iPhone may not have. Ovi (in Finnish meaning “Door”) will be the door for more than 2 million songs and games available for download on the new device. Users will be able to download wirelessly in their own home or anywhere there is access to a computer.

But this is not the first time Nokia has made an attempt like this to increase its revenue. In October of 2003 the company revealed the N-Gage, a game-playing cell phone, but was “stocked-out” due to poor sales. The N95 smartphone, which was released in the U.S. on April 7, 2007 (before the iPhone on June 29, 2007) includes WiFi, a GPS, a music player, and a 5 megapixel digital camera. The three other phones that were revealed at the event in London will be in-stock next quarter. The new N81 and the modified N95 smartphones were among the revealed at yesterday’s event; the N81 is a new member to Nokia’s smartphone family; the N95 has been modified by having more memory and a sleeker LCD screen.

When Nokia was asked about the striking similarity between this and the iPhone, Nokia’s Executive Vice President and General Manager of Multimedia, Anssi Vanjoki, said, “If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride.”

Nokia first demoed their iPhone rival August 29th. During their demo they omitted the fact that the demo was for the software to be in use, not the actual hardware.[1]

Florida wins BCS National Championship Game over Oklahoma

Florida wins BCS National Championship Game over Oklahoma

Friday, January 9, 2009

The Florida Gators defeated the Oklahoma Sooners by a score of 24 to 14 last night’s FedEx BCS National Championship Game to win the Division I title of the National Collegiate Athletic Association‘s American college football league. Florida, ranked Number 1 in the nation, were led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Tim Tebow. “I promised the guys that I would go out and play with all my heart. I was so motivated tonight,” said Tebow. They were matched up against a Number 2 ranked Oklahoma team with a powerful offense, including this year’s Heisman Trophy winner, quarterback Sam Bradford. The game took place at a sold-out Dolphin Stadium in Miami, as a stadium record 78,468 fans attended the match.

Both team’s defensed dominated each others’ offenses in the first half, forcing a 7 to 7 score when halftime came against a Florida offense that averaged 54 points a game and an Oklahoma offense that averaged 40 points. In total, both team’s defenses had 4 interceptions, 2 for Florida and 2 for Oklahoma. Florida’s defense stopped Oklahoma twice during a goal line stand, stopping them on a fourth-down rush once, and a forced interception out of the hands of Oklahoma wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias by Florida’s Ahmad Black.

On the offensive side of the ball, Florida was led by Tebow. Although throwing 2 interceptions, Tebow completed 18 put of 30 passes for 2 touchdowns, as well as rushed 22 times for over 100 yards. Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford helped the Sooners offense through the air, completing 26 out of 41 passes for 256 yards and 2 passing touchdowns, but also throwing two interceptions. In the fourth quarter, Tebow completed a key 4-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver David Nelson, making the score 24 to 14 and putting the game out of reach for Oklahoma.

Some college fans believe that Florida did not rightly win the national championship, though. Fans of the Utah Utes believed that their undefeated team should have at least earned a spot in the game against Oklahoma or Florida’s one-loss teams. Fans of the USC Trojans and the Texas Longhorns also believed that the teams could have earned a spot in the game, due to their similar records. On the matter, Florida head coach Urban Meyer said “This is one of the best teams in college football history. Let someone else worry about all that. The Gators are No.1.”

On the game, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops commented “In the end, I’ll be glad to try again next year. If that’s the biggest burden I have to bear in my life, I’m a pretty lucky guy.” Tim Tebow, in a post-game interview, said “I was already motivated for a national championship game. But you know, there was some trash talking going on, and it just gets me going during the game.” In a losing effort, Sam Bradford commented “In the first half, we had opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of. In the second half, when we needed to make the plays, we just couldn’t do it.”

Arkansas Democratic party chairman assassinated by gunman

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Bill Gwatney, chairman of the Democratic Party of Arkansas, died this afternoon at 3:59 pm CDT (UTC-5) after having been shot earlier this morning.

“He [the gunman] came in and went into this office and started shooting,” said police Lt. Terry Hastings, speaking to reporters outside the party headquarters.

The suspect is Tim Johnson, a white male, described by Gwatney’s secretary as wearing “khaki pants, white shirt, silver-gray hair, late 40s.” He reportedly walked into the party headquarters facilities in Little Rock, Arkansas, conversed with the Chairman’s secretary, refused her offer of bumper stickers, and then walked past her saying he had to see the Chairman.

After the shooting, Johnson got into his blue Chevrolet pickup truck and led police on a 25-mile chase. The end result was the shooting of the suspect, who was airlifted to a hospital and eventually died of his wounds.

According to The New York Times, Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton issued a joint statement saying, “We are stunned and shaken by today’s shooting at the Arkansas Democratic Party where our good friend and fellow Democrat Bill Gwatney was critically wounded … Bill is not only a strong chairman of Arkansas’ Democratic Party, but he is also a cherished friend and confidante.”

Gwatney was also a car dealership owner and former state senator.

Wikinews interviews John Wolfe, Democratic Party presidential challenger to Barack Obama

Wikinews interviews John Wolfe, Democratic Party presidential challenger to Barack Obama

Sunday, May 20, 2012

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate John Wolfe, Jr. of Tennessee took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Wolfe, an attorney based out of Chattanooga, announced his intentions last year to challenge President Barack Obama in the Democratic Party presidential primaries. So far, he has appeared on the primary ballots in New Hampshire, Missouri, and Louisiana. In Louisiana, he had his strongest showing, winning 12 percent overall with over 15 percent in some congressional districts, qualifying him for Democratic National Convention delegates. However, because certain paperwork had not been filed, the party stripped Wolfe of the delegates. Wolfe says he will sue the party to receive them.

Wolfe will compete for additional delegates at the May 22 Arkansas primary and the May 29 Texas primary. He is the only challenger to Obama in Arkansas, where a May 10 Hendrix College poll of Democrats shows him with 38 percent support, just short of the 45 percent for Obama. Such an outing would top the margin of Texas prison inmate Keith Russell Judd, who finished 18 percent behind Obama with 41 percent in the West Virginia Democratic primary; the strongest showing yet against the incumbent president. Despite these prospects, the Democratic Party of Arkansas has already announced that if Wolfe wins any delegates in their primary, again, due to paperwork, the delegates will not be awarded. Wolfe will appear on the Texas ballot alongside Obama, activist Bob Ely, and historian Darcy Richardson, who ended his campaign last month.

Wolfe has previously run for U.S. Congress as the Democratic Party’s nominee. On his campaign website, he cites the influence “of the Pentagon, Wall Street, and corporations” on the Obama administration as a reason for his challenge, believing these negatively affect “loyal Americans, taxpayers and small businesses.” Wolfe calls for the usage of anti-trust laws to break up large banks, higher taxes on Wall Street, the creation of an “alternative federal reserve” to assist community banks, and the implementation of a single-payer health care system.

With Wikinews, Wolfe discusses his campaign, the presidency of Barack Obama, corporations, energy, the federal budget, immigration, and the nuclear situation in Iran among other issues.

Enter The World Of Programming With Python Training}

Submitted by: Techno Choice

There have been debates on the topic that which are the most convenient programming languages for a fresher to start coding. While C and Java topped the list earlier this decade, Python has replaced them in todays advanced world. Python training is in craze among the young students who are just out of school to try their interest in programming.

The Engineering course curriculum in India suggest the colleges to start the programming classes for the students with C, followed by C++ and Java. This has created an assumption that C kick-starts the coding lessons for freshers. A simple metaphor would help you understand the difference between starting programming lessons with C and Python better. To learn programming with C or C++ is like trying to drive by learning how to manufacture, assemble, and then use a car. You will eventually learn to drive, but at the cost of unnecessary pressure and information a little too soon than required. However, if one starts with Python training it would be like learning to drive an automatic. So, you need not know how the engine works, how to assemble, what your car can and cannot do, etc. The only thing you get to do initially is what you ought to do, i.e. driving. In our scenario it is programming. Later comes, the technical aspects.

Python can be used to process anything that can be saved on a computer like numbers, text, data, images, statistics etc. Its easy-to-use feature will keep programmers engaged and excited as they begin to learn Python. It has become famous with its characteristics like easy indentation, naming conventions, modularity etc. Python is widely used in the daily operations of Google, NASA, New York Stock Exchange and our favorite video sharing website, YouTube. Not just in the industry big shots, Python is extensively used even in business, government and non-government organizations too.

Python is called an interpreted language. This means the code written in Python is converted to computer-readable code at the program run time. Initially, Python was called a Scripting Language, suggesting its use only in trivial jobs. But as the time advanced, its user-friendly features started surfacing making it the most commonly used language today for writing large programs. The 4 features that created such high demand for Python training are:

High-level Language: Python is a high level language. It means that it provides a level of abstraction that helps you focus on algorithms and the functionality of the code. You need not worry about the low-level details like Manual memory management etc. Also, there is a huge library of pre-coded functionalities for almost any need.

Dynamic: The main aspect that makes Python a friendly language is its runtime. Features like dynamic typing, easy introspection and reflection all make coding easier and reduces the time of programming.

Expressive Syntax: Expressive syntax includes: how easy it is to express an idea and how concisely can you do it. Python training allows you to write complex codes within few lines, still keeping its readability intact.

Readability: It is the key strength of Python. Instead of curly braces, indentation helps in easy readability and understandability of the program. Well-indented code delimits the blocks of code in a program. It is very important for writing or understanding a code.

Thus, with the above features, Python training can very well act as a mentoring course to freshers. It allows them to focus on problem decomposition and data type design rather than dealing with trivial implementation issues. The concepts like procedures, loops or user-defined objects can be instilled in their brains in the very first course.

It can be stated as a bottom line that Python is a fresher-friendly yet a powerful language, that lets the beginners focus on algorithms, abstracting low level implementation details, making it the best first programming language.

England’s Football Association complains over missed goal

England’s Football Association complains over missed goal
By | Posted in Uncategorized

Thursday, February 5, 2009

The English Football Association (FA) has complained after broadcaster ITV cut away to an advertisement just before a winning goal in a match.

The match, an FA Cup Merseyside derby between Everton F.C. and Liverpool F.C., was in extra time after 118 minutes without a goal when ITV’s automated advertisement server, designed for use only during ordinary programming, began playing out commercials. During this time, Everton’s Dan Gosling scored the winning goal. In some regions the system returned to the match just before the goal, but viewers in the south of England saw only the celebrations after the goal.

Michael Grade, executive chairman of ITV, admitted to ITN that the broadcast had been a shambles and said that “yellow or red cards” would go to those responsible once it was established how it happened. ITV has received over 1,000 complaints. ITV has previously had issues with FA Cup coverage. The Histon F.C.Leeds United A.F.C. game managed to include swearing from Leeds fans and scenes of a naked player, whilst heavy rain marred picture quality.

The FA’s statement on this issue said “It is obviously very disappointing that viewers and fans did not see the only goal of last night’s FA Cup replay between Everton and Liverpool. Clearly we are seeking a full explanation from ITV as to why this happened. It is important that lessons are learned and that this does not happen again”.
