Congressman Cunningham admits taking bribes

Monday, November 28, 2005

U.S. Representative Randy “Duke” Cunningham (RCA) pled guilty today to conspiring to take bribes in exchange for using his influence as a member of the House Appropriations Committee to help a defense contractor get business. In total he pled guilty to one count of income tax evasion and four counts of conspiracy, namely mail fraud, wire fraud, bribery of public official and accepting bribes. U.S. District judge Larry A. Burns scheduled Cunnigham to be sentenced on February 27. He is facing up to 10 years in prison and nearly $500,000 in fines, as well as forfeiture of unspecified amounts of cash and property.

In the court hearing, Cunningham admitted to accepting “bribes in exchange for performance of official duties” between “the year 2000 and June of 2005”, taking “both cash payments and payments in kind” and following up by “trying to influence the Defense Department”.

The federal investigation against Cunningham was triggered by his sale of his California residence to defense contractor Mitchell Wade in late 2003. However, Wade never moved in and sold the house at a $700,000 loss three quarters of a year later. At the same time Wade’s company MZM won tens of millions of dollars in defense contracts. Subsequent investigations discovered more questionable business transactions, including interactions with the defense contractor ADCS. In his plea agreement he testified that, among other charges, he “demanded, sought and received at least $2.4 million in illicit payments and benefits from his co-conspirators in various forms, including cash, checks, meals, travel, lodging, furnishings, antiques, rugs, yacht club fees, boat repairs and improvements, moving expenses, cars and boats.”

Cunningham announced his resignation after the hearing. In a written statement released by his law firm O’Melveny & Myers LLP he declared “The truth is — I broke the law, concealed my conduct, and disgraced my high office. I know that I will forfeit my freedom, my reputation, my worldly possessions, and most importantly, the trust of my friends and family.”

Russia asks Iceland for details of bank rescue plan before giving loan

Saturday, October 18, 2008

Russia has requested Iceland give them more details of the island nation’s plan to rescue the banking sector and thus the entire national economy before granting them a loan.

Two weeks ago, Iceland’s banking sector collapsed and was largely nationalised. Icelandic banks are in significantly more debt than the country can afford, and the nation may seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund. A decision on whether to involve the IMF is due within a week.

As for Russia, a senior Russian government source is reported by Reuters as having said “At the current moment, we do not yet have enough reasons to give them credit. We did not refuse. We are continuing the talks.” Forbes quoted him as having also said “‘We asked them to collect more information and present a rescue plan for the banking system.”

Meanwhile, there is some optimism in Iceland over the economy. It is hoped by authorities that the lower exchange rate for the króna means that more tourists will be attracted. Bars and restaurants are also doing well. The manager of one bar explained: “Actually, when people get depressed they drink more.”

Over the past week, diplomatic actions have averted — or, at least delayed — military strikes on Syria by the United States. Wikinews sought input from a range of international experts on the situation; and, the tensions caused by Russia’s support for the al-Assad regime despite its apparent use of chemical weapons.

Tensions in the country increased dramatically, late August when it was reported between 100 and 1,300 people were killed in an alleged chemical attack. Many of those killed appeared to be children, with some of the pictures and video coming out of the country showing — according to witnesses — those who died from apparent suffocation; some foaming at the mouth, others having convulsions.

Amongst Syria’s few remaining allies, Iran, China, and Russia continue to oppose calls for military intervention. In an effort to provide a better-understanding of the reasoning behind their ongoing support, the following people were posed a range of questions.

Singer Britney Spears faces hit and run charges

Saturday, September 22, 2007

The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office said yesterday that pop music super-star Britney Spears was facing charges for a hit and run offence and driving without a valid drivers’ license.

Charges were filed following an accident in which police allege Spears smashed her car into another vehicle in a parking area in August of 2007.

She could face a maximum of six months in jail and US$2,000 in fines if convicted.

A group of paparazzi recorded a video Britney steering her car into another vehicle on August 6 as she tried to pull into a parking spot in a Studio City lot.

Kim Robard-Rifkin was the owner of the other car and she filed a police report three days after the accident. The 59-year-old nurse found out that it was Spears who ran into her car after watching a video on a celebrity website.

Robard-Rifkin said, “I simply want my car fixed, the same as I would fix somebody’s car if I had done that.”

Spears will be arraigned on October 10.

Choosing Your Bed Different Bed Ideas

By Carole Johnson

In earlier times, men were sleeping on the ground. This left them unprotected from the cold, insects and other conditions. In time, the use of beds which allows them to sleep above the ground has been used. Nowadays, there are a several types of beds that you can choose from depending on your need and taste. They offer a comfortable place of refuge after a tiring day and provide other uses as well.

When you’re looking for a new bed, choose one that can suit your needs aside from needing a place to sleep. There are several bed types that you can pick:

1. Platform Beds – this type of bed allows you to have a comfortable place to sleep in, while being elevated above the ground. With these types of beds, you can have the option to have a bed which is simply elevated above the ground or one that is designed to have drawers or a storage area under the bed.

This can be quite an advantage if you want to have a large bed in a room with limited space. You can place your clothes and other items on the storage space of your platform bed, making additional cabinets and shelves unnecessary. This can allow you to have the bed space that you want without having to worry for storage space for your clothes and other items.

2. Loft Beds – another bed idea that you can choose to have is getting a bed which is elevated high enough allowing the space beneath it to be utilized. You can have loft beds with desk which is quite common in dormitories for college students. The bed is raised high enough to accommodate space for the desk to be placed underneath it. This can serve as a workstation for students.

However, aside from placing a desk, you can have the option to place other things underneath your loft bed. You can rather add place a couch underneath or even cabinets for storage of your bedroom items. Others even prefer placing another bed underneath, which is quite practical for large families with small bedroom spaces. The important thing is that you have a ceiling which is high enough to allow you to have a loft bed which can accommodate enough space for anything that you add underneath it.

3. Bunk Beds – when you have kids who share a room with each other, you might want to consider getting a bunk bed for them. This can be a practical choice, especially if you have limited bedroom space which may not be able to accommodate to separate beds. By getting a bunk bed for your kids, you can add other items in the bedroom or have free space for your kids.

Bunk beds were originally designed to have a ladder at the side of the bed to have access to the upper bunk. This makes it fun for most kids when it’s time to sleep. However, there are different designs available as well. You can get bunk beds with stair, which can be much safer compared to just having a ladder.

Remote Assistance service of Windows OS vulnerable to attack

Remote Assistance service of Windows OS vulnerable to attack

Tuesday, July 19, 2005

Until a patch is issued, Microsoft recommends that users close or block TCP port 3389, the port opened when the Remote Assistance service of its Microsoft Windows operating system (OS) is enabled. The Remote Assistance feature is a service of the OS that allows Internet Technology administrators of corporate workgroups remote access to other desktops to perform maintenance and other configuration tasks from their own computer. It can also be used by on-line tech support sites. A support assistant can go into a user’s machine, if the service is enabled, and themself make changes directly to another person’s computer to resolve an issue.

To initialize the remote assistance feature, the user of the helper computer must first make a request of the user of the target computer. Compliance must be granted by the user of the target machine, which then fully opens the communication port of the target machine to the helper computer. The operator of the helper computer then has control of target computer to make changes at will. The user of the target machine can watch in a separate window the actions of the helper, and either party to the session can end it at any time.

In a telephone conversation with a Microsoft representative Tuesday, it was learned that work to develop a security patch is underway, but when it will be available is unclear. It was cited that a patch must work consistently across multiple platform versions of the OS.

The vulnerability, thought at first to affect only Windows XP SP2, is now believed to affect all current Windows editions, including Windows 2000, Windows XP SP1, Windows XP Professional x64, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 SP1, and Windows Server x64.

The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is not enabled by default, however if the service is enabled, a Denial of Service attack could cause the OS to restart unexpectedly according to Microsoft, or experience buffer overflows according to Symantec. The RDP is enabled by default on Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Microsoft suggests users block TCP port 3389 (the port used by RDP) on their firewall, or disable Terminal Services or Remote Desktop if not required by the user. The remote desktop connections could also be secured using either Internet Protocol Security or a virtual private network connection until a patch is ready.

To disable Remote Assistance on a Windows XP Edition, the steps are:

 1. click ‘Start’, right-click ‘My Computer’, select ‘Properties’
 2. select ‘Remote’ tab on top of the ‘Systems Properties’ window, clear checkbox that says “Allow Remote Assistance invitations to be sent from this computer.”
 3. click ‘Apply’ button

The group, Internet Storm Center, detected spikes in scanning for port 3389 beginning July 6. Larger numbers of systems scanned were reported on July 13. Crackers may be scanning for vulnerable machines, the group said.

“It’s a kernel vulnerability,” said VP of engineering for Symantec Alfred Huger, “so it will be difficult to exploit reliably. But he [the original discoverer] found the vulnerability with a commonly-used tool, so if he can find it, so can others. I don’t think it will turn it into a large-scale worm, but then, some kernel vulnerabilities have ended up as just that, like the Witty worm.”

5 Summer Lawn Care Tips For Every Homeowner

5 Summer Lawn Care Tips for Every Homeowner

by

Lisa S

Homeowners looking for summer lawn care tips have come to the right place. Summertime is one of the most difficult times of the year for our lawns. Spring s lush, green grass has gone and been replaced by dry, half-dead lawns. So how do you make the most of your lawn and help it make it through the summer months? Here are five lawn care tips to help you do just that:

1.Avoid the urge to cut the grass too short. When you are approaching summer but still putting up with the rainy season, it can be very tempting to cut that grass as short as possible. After all, the rain makes it seem to grow a foot in two days! But as summer approaches, make sure that you adjust the height of your mower blades. They should leave your lawn at least three inches tall or maybe even taller than that. Lawns that are kept at taller heights are able to grow their roots more deeply than those that are kept exceptionally short. Consequently, lawns that are not cut as short will dry out more slowly because their roots are longer and give them access to water that is further and further under the ground.

2.Be consistent with your lawn care practices. One issue some homeowners have is the fact that they wait until their lawns have died off and then start watering them so that they will turn green again. This simply creates too much activity for your grass. If you want it to stay green and lush all year long, then make sure that you are really committed to watering it as much as it needs to be. Of course it may be nearly impossible to keep your lawn green, and if so, you just need to accept this and let the lawn go dormant until a more favorable season rolls around.

3.Don t forget that your lawn still needs water, even if you have allowed it to go dormant. Water the lawn early in the day and let it soak down deep into your soil. Dormant lawns only need about a half inch of water every two or three weeks in order to keep them alive. If you keep up your watering rates like this over the summer, you should see instant renewal when the fall rolls around.

4.Keep certain lawn care practices to the end of the summer. Weed killers are best used between late August and early September. Also tasks like thatching, seeding, and fertilizing should be saved for this same time frame.

5.Try to keep the traffic on your lawn to a minimum during the summer months. These are the times when your grass really needs a break, and any kind of traffic on it is going to make it that much more difficult for it to recover when the fall finally rolls around.

Even when your lawn is lying dormant, you still need to take proper care of it, and by following the above tips, you are sure to be one of the first homeowners with a nicely trimmed lawn when fall does arrive. Just focus on the basics over the summer and let your lawn get the rest that it really needs.

Thousands evacuated after chemical truck overturns in Pennsylvania

Thousands evacuated after chemical truck overturns in Pennsylvania

Saturday, March 21, 2009

A tractor-trailer carrying 32,000 pounds of hydrofluoric acid overturned on a northeastern Pennsylvania highway early Saturday morning, prompting the evacuation of about 5,000 people. The truck, registered to the Honeywell company, flipped over at about 2:40 a.m. after the driver swerved to avoid a deer.

The pressurized acid began to leak after the vehicle flipped over onto its side on Route 33 in Plainfield Township, but Northampton County authorities said Saturday the nobody was injured and the leak was contained by noon.

Residents were evacuated as Hazmat officials were brought in to clean up the site. Inhalation of hydrofluoric acid can be fatal, and low doses can irritate the eyes, nose and respiratory tract.

But Northampton County Administration Director John Conklin said the leak was slow-moving, and not enough of the chemical leaked to create a toxic cloud.

“This will be over real quick,” Conklin told CNN International.

Hundreds of evacuees were taken to the Pen Argyl Area High School in nearby Pen Argyl, but Conklin anticipated they would be able to return to their homes by the end of the day.

Hydrogen fluoride is a hazardous and highly corrosive chemical compound used mostly for industrial purposes. It is also an ingredient in high-octane gasoline, refrigerants and light bulbs.

The driver of the truck, Raymond Leblanc, 54, of Harrow, Ontario, was treated at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg for minor injuries and released Saturday. A passenger, Joseph Dault, 51, of Ontario, was not hurt.
