Chinese government to safeguard old Beijing

Chinese government to safeguard old Beijing

Saturday, March 26, 2005

Beijing’s city legislature has approved a bill, one year in the making, to safeguard the historical and cultural heritage of old Beijing. The new 41-article set of regulations will come into effect May 1, requiring the city to protect listed heritage sites and unlisted sites deemed of historical or cultural value. It also guarantees protection for the area within the city’s Second Ring Road.

Director of the Beijing Administrative Bureau of Cultural Heritage, Mei Ninghua, said “the most encouraging content of the regulations is that Beijing will pay more attention to protecting the old city’s landscape in its entirety, rather than just focussing on scattered heritage sites.” This means the old city layout, colours of buildings, and the names of houses and lanes will have legal protection.

“We took measures to protect the city’s siheyuan courtyard houses by tagging protection plates on more than 650 of them in 2003, preventing them from being demolished or damaged during the city’s massive housing reconstruction projects,” said Mei.

“Now the new regulations give legal buttress to the protection of siheyuan courtyard homes, as well as other unmovable ancient treasures, that have yet to be listed but are at risk of being demolished during urban renovation.”

Modern Beijing, capital of China for 850 years, was built by Mongul Emporer Kublai Khan in 1267 AD. In the vicinity of the current city once was Ji (?), the capital of the State of Yan (?), a power of the Warring States Period – but it has been lost in the mists of time.

The Comforts Of Modern And Loft Bed Frames

By Sam Kiesel

One of the most important things that we humans need and want aside from food is relaxation and of course sleep. A good night’s rest is inevitable for an individual to perform well for his or her day’s task. And in order to have that peaceful slumber, we must have the perfect bed for ourselves. Not only do we need the perfect bed, we also have to have its perfect frame. One popular type of bed frame nowadays is those categorized under the modern bed frames.

Aside from a comfortable mattress, a good bed frame is also essential to satisfy our bedroom needs. Although classic bed frames are considered timeless and enduring, modern bed frames are now becoming a hit. By definition, modern bed frames are those created and fashioned in the late 19th century to date. Compared to classic bed frames, these modern bed frames do not need bulky spring boxes to put in the mattress. In addition, modern bed frames are crafted for space saving functions. It looks more manageable too as most are made of polished metal, hard plastic and light but substantial wood.

An example of a modern bed frame is a platform style bed. This style presents a wooden platform with a mattress although there are now those made from metal. It has very minimalistic features yet it still looks elegant and relaxing to sleep in. The platform style bed frame was actually inspired by the Japanese who are known for their simplicity.

Modern bed frames have a fashionable look that undoubtedly matches the styles of most modern-styled houses today. As mentioned earlier, there are three kinds of material modern bed frames are made of. These materials are polished metal, hard plastic and light but substantial wood. The wooden bed frames usually comes from oak, mahogany and cherry which are hardwoods that guarantee stability and endurance. The polished metals usually come from brass and iron that also ensures sturdiness.

From these three materials, another modern bed frame style was innovated. It is an evolution of the bunk beds that were popular in the 80’s. This style is now called loft bed frames. Loft bed frames, like bunk bed frames, have a second level of bed frame wherein another mattress can be placed in.

This style of bed frame also has a ladder attached to its side or its end in order to climb to the second level. The only thing that differs a loft bed frames from a bunk bed frame is that its first level is used for a different purpose and not only for sleeping. This style of bed frame allows its users to transform the lower part of the frame into a study area, a play area or even storage area.

Most of the time, loft bed frames, are maximized by students living in dorms and businessmen who own transient houses or apartments. This style of modern bed frame truly benefits them as it not only saves space; it also has a multi-purpose function. For students, they can use the first level of their frame as a study area where they can put their computers on while businessmen can surely conserve the room’s area to have more space for another room.

Loft bed frames however have its constraints. Though the style is fashionable and functional, it is not recommended for children under seven years of age. It could be dangerous to them as they may fall from it while sleeping. Before having loft bed frames, one must also take into consideration the height of the ceiling of the house. Loft bed frames are not suitable for houses with low roofs for it will only make the second level cramped and sleeping uncomfortable. It may save you some space horizontally but will limit your space vertically.

So, as more and more styles for modern bed frames are created, we sleepers also have more and more choices to make. It is always our decision as to what style of modern bed frame is functional and favorable for us. Some people may still prefer the classic bed frames but it’s still always up to us to resolve whether we would choose the improvements that modern bed frames offer us.

India: Maharashtra plastic ban comes into force

India: Maharashtra plastic ban comes into force

Monday, June 25, 2018

On Saturday, the plastic ban in the Indian state of Maharashtra came into force. In an attempt to minimise pollution, the state government has introduced a ban on single-use plastics.

The leader of the Yuya Sena political party, Aaditya Thackeray, said on Twitter, “The ban on single use disposable plastic cups, plastic bags, plastic straws, plastic plates and cutlery, styrofoam cutlery and non woven bags”. He added, “these are global issues now and we have taken a step to combat it”.

Plastic pollution has led to the choking of drains, marine pollution and a risk of animals consuming plastics. This year, India’s motto for World Environment Day — June 5 — was “Beat Plastic Pollution”. People violating the plastic ban are to face a fine of 5,000 Indian Rupees (INR) for the first offence. For the second offence, the fine is INR 10,000 and the third time offence is INR 25,000 and a three-month prison term. Deputy municipal commissioner Nidhi Choudhary said, “To weed out corruption, we plan to give inspectors payment gadgets for electronic receipts of the fines”.

The Maharashtra government has given a 90-day period for manufacturers to dispose of existing polyethylene terephthalate (PET/PETE) plastic spoons and plates, while shopkeepers and citizens in general have six months to dispose of plastics. However, the ban does not prohibit plastic usage for wrapping medicines or milk cartons thicker than 50 microns.

The state government had announced the decision for the plastic ban on March 23. According to NDTV’s report, Maharashtra is the eighteenth Indian state to enforce a state-wide plastic ban. Aaditya Thackeray also said, “I congratulate the citizens for making this into a movement, even before the ban was enforceable, giving up single use disposable plastic.”

US home sales fall at fastest pace on record

US home sales fall at fastest pace on record

Monday, January 25, 2010

Sales of previously owned homes in the US fell at the fastest rate ever recorded last December, according to data from the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

According to the association, existing home sales fell 16.7% last month, to an annual rate of 5.45 million, the largest crash since 1968. The figure was less than the 5.90 million units, or an eleven percent drop, predicted by most analysts.

Sales of homes went up for the entire of 2009 to 5.156 million units, or 4.9% for the year, and prices dropped from 2008 by 12.4%.

NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun described the figures as being “probably the largest annual drop since the Great Depression”. He said that “the market is going through a period of swings driven by the tax credit. We’re likely to have another surge in the spring. Job creation is the key to a continued recovery in the second half of the year.”

Pierre Ellis, a senior economist for Decision Economics in New York, commented on the figures, saying: “The drop in home sales is the payback for the acceleration of sales that occurred with the original first-time home buyers tax credit. […] There is an issue as to whether the decline represents a fundamental weakening.”

“The housing market continues to face significant headwinds, including high unemployment, record delinquencies and foreclosures, the specter of rising mortgage rates as the Fed’s [mortgage-backed securities] purchase programs comes to a close in late March, and tight credit,” Omair Sharif, an economist for RBS Securities, noted.

“Still, the resale market showed resilience in the second half of 2009, and the expansion and extension of the tax credit to April 30 could boost purchases during the spring selling season,” he said.

“We’ll see a pickup in existing home sales in the next couple of months as people take advantage of the tax-credit extension”, economist Adam York of Wells Fargo Securities LLC in Charlotte, North Carolina claimed. He fore-casted a pace of 5.4 million. He said that there were unlikely to be buyers of homes, despite the fact that the U.S. was “past the bottom.”

All four regions of the country saw a decline in sales. In the Northeast, sales fell 19.5 percent, in the Midwest, they plunged 25.8 percent. The South, the country’s largest region, saw a 16.3% decline, while in the West, sales waned by 4.8%.

US stocks fell slightly after the announcement, but went back up later in the day.

Do You Know The Common Causes Of Yeast Infections?

By Christopher Smith

Most any woman who has had a yeast infection can explain every painful, irritating, and overly itchy detail with burning accuracy. What many women do not know is the cause of yeast infection. This means they can only hope to avoid getting another, which they ultimately will if they aren’t properly protecting themselves against yeast infections.

Vaginal yeast infections are the most commonly known types of yeast infection although there are others. Thrush is common in babies, the elderly, diabetics and people who take steroids. Others who commonly have yeast infections include people who have weak immune systems. The broad cause of yeast infections in all of these people is an overgrowth of candidiasis, a fungus from the Candida family that is naturally present in the body.

To be able to prevent yeast infections you have to understand the causes. When Candida has the opportunity, or the right circumstances, a rapid growth will happen. This overgrowth puts the body out of balance and causes the symptoms of yeast infection. Yeast, being a fungus, needs to have warmth, moisture, and darkness to grow.

Wearing tight clothing holds the heat and moisture (usually from sweat) close, in women this will cause the perfect conditions in the vagina for yeast to grow. So wearing tight clothing is one of the often overlooked causes of yeast infections.

Other causes of yeast infections include high blood sugar levels. Diabetics who do not have their blood sugar levels under control run the risk of vaginal yeast infections and thrush. Both are painful. Yeast feeds on glucose (sugar) and when the blood glucose levels are high it creates a perfect opportunity for the fungus to grow. Wearing appropriate clothing doesn’t help your mouth, it is always warm and wet so it is at risk if your blood sugar isn’t under control.

Wearing damp under clothing, including swim suits or sweaty gym clothing, is also on the list of common causes of yeast infections. The moisture can cause yeast infections on the skin in creases and under ‘fat rolls’ as well as increasing your chances of getting a vaginal yeast infection. Many people do not realize that Candida can flourish on the skin’s surface in areas where skin folds are touching. This can be an ongoing problem for overweight people.

Perhaps the most common cause of yeast infections is antibiotic usage. Taking antibiotics kills bacteria in the body; this can cause a change in the balance and an overgrowth of Candida which, of course, causes yeast infections. People who are prone to yeast infections can take an oral antibiotic/anti-fungal that will help by preventing the imbalance that causes yeast infections.

Another common misconception is that people get yeast infections from not being clean so using douches and washing excessively will help this. In reality, washing excessively and douching more frequently than suggested can cause a yeast infection. The excessive washing can kill enough bacteria that is supposed to be on the skin causing an overgrowth of Candida. Sudsy bath products can also cause yeast infections. Bubble baths aren’t healthy for the female genitalia and shouldn’t be used unless care is taken to rinse thoroughly and not allow suds to come in contact with the vagina.

Knowing what to look for and what causes yeast infections can help you to prevent future infections, and any woman who has had one will agree; preventing a yeast infection is much better than treating one.

ACLU: Gen. Sanchez possibly perjured himself at 2004 Senate inquiry

">
ACLU: Gen. Sanchez possibly perjured himself at 2004 Senate inquiry

Wednesday, April 6, 2005

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) claims that a recently obtained 18-month-old memo shows that a top U.S. commander of armed forces in Iraq was untruthful when he testified before the United States Congress last year on Iraqi prison abuse. The September 14, 2003 memo was among government documents concerning the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The ACLU gained access to the documents after successfully suing the government under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.

The 2003 memo seemingly contradicts sworn testimony by Sanchez given during the Senate Hearing on Iraq Prison Abuse. Intentionally being untruthful at a Congressional hearing is considered the crime of perjury.

On May 19th, 2004, during those hearings, Jack Reed, a Democratic U.S. senator from Rhode Island, asked Sanchez about claims of abuse of Iraqi prisoners under U.S. care. “General Sanchez, today’s USA Today, sir, reported that you ordered or approved the use of sleep deprivation, intimidation by guard dogs, excessive noise and inducing fear as an interrogation method for a prisoner in Abu Ghraib prison,” Reed asked Sanchez. “Is that correct?”

“Sir, that may be correct that it’s in a news article, but I never approved any of those measures to be used within CJTF-7 at any time in the last year.” He then reiterated, “I have never approved the use of any of those methods within CJTF-7 (Coalition Joint Task Force-7) in the 12.5 months that I’ve been in Iraq,” Gen. Sanchez’s answered at the hearing.

But Sanchez’s 2004 answer is at odds with the 2003 memo bearing his signature, which specifically addressed sleep deprivation (“sleep management”), intimidation by guard dogs (“presence of military working dog”), excessive noise (“yelling, loud music, and light control”), and inducing fear (“fear up harsh”). The following are excerpts from the memo:

Z. (S/NF) Sleep Management: Detainee provided minimum 4 hours of sleep per 24 hour period, not to exceed 72 continuous hours.

Y. (S/NF) Presence of Military Working Dog: Exploits Arab fear of dogs while maintaining security during interrogations. Dogs will be muzzled and under control of MWD handler at all times to prevent contact with detainee.

AA. (S/NF) Yelling, Loud Music, and Light Control: Used to create fear, disorient detainee and prolong capture shock. Volume controlled to prevent injury.

E. (S/NF) Fear Up Harsh: Significantly increasing the fear level in a detainee.

The label “S/NF” stands for Secret/Not Releasable to Foreign Nationals. Information is properly exempted from The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) if it contains National Security Information.

The only section in the memo that Gen. Sanchez labeled “U” for Unclassified was:

(U) The purpose of all interviews and interrogations is to get the most information from a detainee with the least intrusive method, always applied in a humane and lawful manner with sufficient oversight by trained investigators or interrogators. Operating instructions must be developed based on command policies to insure uniform, careful, and safe application of interrogations of detainees.

The ACLU said it sent a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales requesting an “Investigation of Possible Perjury by General Ricardo A. Sanchez” and renewing their prior request “for an Outside Special Counsel to Investigate and Prosecute Violations or Conspiracies to Violate Criminal Laws Against Torture or Abuse of Detainees.”

UK’s ITV cancels police drama “The Bill” after 27 years

UK’s ITV cancels police drama “The Bill” after 27 years

Friday, March 26, 2010

British television network ITV announced today that it will cancel long running police drama The Bill. The Bill is one of the United Kingdom’s longest running drama series, having premiered the pilot episode, entitled “Woodentop”, in 1983.

The series has suffered from declining ratings despite an overhaul in 2009 which included a move to a post-watershed time slot. In a statement, ITV announced that the cancellation was part of a “creative rethink” and that the money saved from the cancellation would be put towards shorter-term dramas. ITV’s Peter Fincham said that “The Bill has been a fixture on our screens for more than 25 years and has been the home of some of the UK’s best serial drama storylines, and a great showcase for terrific scriptwriting and fine acting talent. But times change, and so do the tastes of our audience.” Fincham went on to explain that the decision to cancel the series was a “creative decision” rather than one intended to cut costs.

Ninety people are currently employed on the production team for The Bill and production company Talkback Thames announced that there was a possibility of a “significant number of redundancies”, but the company is entering into consultation with employees. The current series will end later in 2010 and ITV will not be recommissioning it. Investing in shorter-run dramas, ITV announced that, inter alia, a new short series written by Anthony Horowitz is forthcoming.

Bolivia’s Evo Morales wins referendum on a new leftist constitution

Bolivia’s Evo Morales wins referendum on a new leftist constitution

Monday, January 26, 2009

File:Schafik handal con fidel.jpg

The Bolivian President, Evo Morales, 49, has claimed victory after voters ratified a new leftist constitution, granting more power to the country’s indigenous majority.

“The indigenous farmers, the most marginalized sector throughout the history of the republic, are now recognized as people with the same rights as any citizen. Here begins the new Bolivia. Here we begin to reach true equality,” Morales told a crowd in front of the flag-draped balcony of Palacio Quemado in La Paz, the administrative capital of Bolivia.

Ratified with about 60 percent support in a referendum on Sunday based on exit polls, the new constitution lets Morales run for re-election later this year and grants him tighter control over the economy. An official vote count of some 3.8 million registered voters who cast their ballots will be announced February 4.

With the new Magna Carta, South America‘s second poorest country after Guyana becomes a leader in the regional “pink tide” of left-wing governments that have ousted traditional elites and challenged American influence. The new constitution’s elements include recognition of 36 distinct Indian “nations”, increasing the autonomy of Bolivia’s nine regions, establishing state control over key natural resources such as gas, and setting limits on land ownership.

Morales has also promised Bolivia’s native groups that the constitution will keep the white “oligarchs” who ruled the country for 183 years from returning to power. The leftist constitution empowers the government to distribute land to indigenous communities and apportion ethnic quotas for state jobs, including congress seats. “After 500 years, we have retaken the Plaza Murillo! Internal colonialism and external colonialism end here too. Sisters and brothers, neo-liberalism ends here too!” said Morales.

Vice-President Álvaro MarceloGarcía Linera, a principal author of the draft constitution, hailed Sunday’s referendum results, saying, “this will be an egalitarian Bolivia, a Bolivia that leaves behind a dark, colonial, racist past.” Linera, however, has acknowledged that the government has provoked deep divisions and faces vehement oppositions from many of the traditional elite, coming from many mixed-race people in the fertile eastern lowlands which rejected the draft charter.

“I am not saying there will be no more conflict, there will be tensions for a while, I say a decade … but we will have built a state on three principles: the economy under state control, equality, and the territorial decentralization of power,” he said. The new constitution was rejected in four opposition-controlled regions: the tropical lowlands of Pando, Santa Cruz, Tarija and Beni, which contain most of Bolivia’s natural gas production and are responsible for most of its agricultural output.

There will be tensions for a while, I say a decade… but we will have built a state on three principles: the economy under state control, equality, and the territorial decentralization of power.

With the split vote, Oscar Ortiz, the president of the opposition-controlled Senate, has voiced concerns that the charter has become a war of ideas. “The result [of the vote] … will show deep divisions between regions and between Bolivians in each region. A confrontation between ideas and visions about how this country will build its common future will continue,” he said ahead of the referendum.

Former president Carlos Mesa has predicted that the constitution is unlikely to pave the way for real social change amid continuing political struggles. “We will have so many legal battles to go through that I fear that last year’s belligerent climate will continue this year. President Morales is not coming at this with open hands, he has built trenches and dug in,” Mr. Mesa said.

Morales has dismissed the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the U.S. Ambassador to Bolivia, accusing both of conspiracy with the opposition to overthrow his government. The U.S. Embassy in La Paz has called the accusations “false and absurd.” Morales has been very popular among the poor and among Aymara, Quechua and Guarani.

The new constitution’s 411 articles address underrepresentation of indigenous peoples. “It may be the equivalent of Spain’s Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors in 1492. But instead of the blood spilled in that process, Bolivia is advancing in a democratic process that does not exclude or subjugate anyone,” said Xavier Albó, a Jesuit scholar and linguist.

“Finally we have a constitution that leaves racism and hatred aside, because indigenous people are included,” said Adolfo Chavez, president of the Confederation of Indigenous people of Bolivia (CIDOB).

In March 2005, then-President Mesa resigned. The President of Senate Hormando Vaca Díez assumed office as the country’s temporary President. Mesa resigned because of the announcement of highway blockages by Evo Morales and leaders of both the coca growers and the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS). The blockages were meant to pressure the Legislative so that the Hydrocarbons Law, which would raise taxes levied on hydrocarbon extraction from 18% to 50%, could be approved.

The MAS is a political party formed basically by coca-growing campesinos (farmers or farmworkers), communists, admirers of Fidel Castro and indigenous people. The party is against the U.S. government and the alleged American influence in the region, neoliberalism and globalization.

In December 2005, Morales won the presidential election in Bolivia to serve a five-year term. In the 2005 election, his victory marked the country’s first election of an indigenous head of state, but this claim gendered controversy due to the number of mestizo presidents who were elected or appointed before him. He was openly criticized by such figures as Mario Vargas Llosa, who accuses the President of fomenting racial divisions in an increasingly mestizo Latin America.

Morales ran on a campaign of restoring coca farming in Bolivia, in spite of the U.S. program aimed at reducing the ability to grow coca to curb the cocaine industry. Morales is an Aymara Indian and former coca farmer himself, and has described his victory as a signal that “a new history of Bolivia begins, a history where we search for equality, justice and peace with social justice.”

Morales is an admirer of Fidel Castro and he says he is also inspired by the President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Morales supports the creation of an anti-imperialist block formed by Latin-American and Arabian countries against the U.S., which is being organized by the Brazilian President.

In August 2008, Bolivian unrest began against Morales and calls for greater autonomy for the country’s eastern departments grew. Santa Cruz, Beni, Pando, Tarija and Chuquisaca called strikes and protests to oppose the central government’s plan to divert part of the national direct tax on hydrocarbons in favor of its Renta Dignidad pension plan. Brief clashes occurred in the Santa Cruz de la Sierra between police and armed youths enforcing the strike. Violence between Morales’ supporters and opponents resulted in at least 30 deaths.

In September 2008, Bolivian authorities declared a state of emergency in Pando, where Bolivian troops took control of the airport in the region’s capital, Cobija. Amid preparations to retake the city, 20 people were killed. In October 2008, the government and the opposition held talks following which resulted in the signing of a compromise agreement which set the referendum on 25 January 2009 and early elections on December 6, 2009.

Morales in turn promised that he would not run again in 2014 after his likely reelection in 2009, despite the fact that he would be allowed to do so under the new constitution. The new constitution was drafted by the Constituent Assembly in 2007. The referendum set forth two questions: whether to approve the new constitution and whether to limit private estates to 1,000 or 5,000 hectares.

Hunter says he caught ‘Bigfoot’ on camera

Hunter says he caught ‘Bigfoot’ on camera
By | Posted in Uncategorized

Monday, October 29, 2007

A hunter from Pennsylvania says that he managed to snap photographs supposedly of the legendary Bigfoot, but this one is said to be a juvenile.

Rick Jacobs says that he snapped the pictures in September of 2007 when he set up an automatic camera in a tree in the Allegheny National Forest in northwest Pennsylvania for hunting deer. Bait was used to attract animals which consisted of a “aromatic deer attractant” and various mineral in the form of a block that the deer would lick. Jacobs says that he will not reveal the exact location of where the image was taken because he believes hunters and tourists will flood the area in an attempt to get a glimpse of it.

The Bigfoot Field Research Organization says that the photo is of a Bigfoot, but they state that this one appears to be very young. On their website they list the discovery as an “Unclassified primate?”

In all, three images were captured. The first image is of bear cubs, and in the second and third images are what appears to be a “juvenile sasquatch.” Some say that it is likely a bear. There are several minutes, at least 30-35, from the time the bears left to when the unidentified animal arrived. The animal appears to have two arms and two legs, but appears to walk hunched over, with its knuckles dragging on the ground.

“We are seeking comparative images of a skinny, mangy bear, bent over and smelling the ground, as you see in this image. The people we have spoken with so far who have spent a great deal of time with both primates and bears (mainly zoologists) say this figure looks much more like a primate smelling the ground than like a skinny bear smelling the ground,” said a statement posted on the organization’s website.

The organization states that the images are being examined by experts in Canada and the United States and that more information will be available in a few days.

Despite the organization’s claim, the Pennsylvania Game Commission says that they have seen this before and it appears to be a bear with a possible skin disease.
