A bridal shower has traditionally been a get-together in which the bride\’s closest family and friends \”shower\” her with gifts for her upcoming marriage. In the past, these showers were for the women only and followed traditional guidelines. However, today, bridal showers have become more modern, expanding the guest list and changing those guidelines that were once followed closely.

Guests The invitations to the modern bridal shower now include more guests than they once did. Many bridal showers are now going co-ed. Males are typically included on the invitation, as well as children in some cases. The hostess must be sure to include everyone that is expected to attend on the invitation. This is done by naming each person on the envelope, such as Mr. and Mrs. Smith or Mr. and Mrs. Smith and family. Themes Many modern bridal showers are themed parties rather than the traditional shower. The invitation can easily reflect this theme by choosing a design that coordinates with the chosen theme. For instance, if the theme is a honeymoon bridal shower, the hostess should choose an invitation with a tropical island on the front or another vacation picture. A kitchen theme, asking for kitchen related items, could have an invitation that shows a woman working in a kitchen, an apron or a couple enjoying dinner together. Creativity opens many possibilities for invitation design for themed showers. Registries and Gifts Asking for gifts is not something that should be included on a wedding invitation. However, according to etiquette rules, a modern bridal shower invitation allows for the registry information to be included, usually on an insert. It is still inappropriate to ask the guests for money in lieu of gifts. In the case of themed parties, it is completely appropriate for the hostess for the shower to recommend the type of gift that the guests should bring on the invitation. In some cases, a general gift type is listed. In other situations, such as an around-the-clock shower, each guest is given a time of day and she should bring a gift used during that time of day. Food With modern bridal showers, it is not always necessary for the hostess to prepare the entire meal or shoulder the catering bill herself. Some modern bridal showers ask each guest to bring along a dish to pass with the hostess supplying the drinks and the main dish. This request can be made via the invitation or when the guest calls to RSVP. For an additional twist, the hostess can ask each guest to bring along a copy of the recipe for her dish to pass on to the bride.
